Cobb
is fortunate to have unparalleled transportation options. Four major
interstate highways traverse the county
(I-75, I-285, I-20 and I-575), as well as numerous state highways, two
commercial rail lines (CSX and Norfolk Southern) and more than 2,000 miles
of well maintained public roads.
No Georgia community has invested more in
transportation improvements during the past 15 years than Cobb. As the
result of three, voter approved, one percent special use sales tax programs
for transportation almost $1 billion was spent on local highway, road and
street improvements during the 1990s. An aggressive road improvement program
continues and is being paid for in cash.
Air
Transportation
The center of Cobb is only 20
miles from
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, the busiest passenger
airport in the world. Twenty-three passenger and 19 cargo air carriers fly out
of Hartsfield. Being on the northwestern edge of Atlanta allows Cobb easy
access to Hartsfield-Jackson via I-75, I-285 or surface streets, with a typical
airport commute of 25-45 minutes.
McCollum Field
in Kennesaw is the fourth-busiest airport in Georgia with an annual economic
impact of more than $47 million to the local economy. The field is home to
more than 390 aircraft (both corporate and pleasure) and logs about 300
takeoffs and landings each day. McCollum Field is served by two full-service
fixed-base operators and a fully-manned control tower.
Cobb
County continues to pursue additional improvements for McCollum Field. The
airport runway is lengthening to 6,100 feet and has plans to widen the
runway to 100 feet and construct an additional parallel taxiway.
McCollum Field is owned by Cobb County, operated by the County Department of
Transportation and managed by a full-time, professional airport manager.
The runway at Dobbins Air Reserve Base
serves military users, including Naval Air Station Atlanta and Lockheed
Martin Aeronautics Company, which is located adjacent to the base.
Public Transportation
Cobb Community
Transit (CCT) operates a fleet of 75 buses on 17 routes, carrying 2.7
million passengers annually. A reciprocal transfer agreement with the
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) links CCT services with
regional employment, entertainment centers and Hartsfield-Jackson
International Airport in Atlanta.
Transportation Alternatives
Cobb County is home to two Community
Improvement Districts (CIDs) in the Cumberland and Town Center business
markets. The CIDs levy a voluntary tax on commercial properties within the
district. A property owner-controlled Board of Directors in each CID decides
how these funds will be utilized. Policies mandated by the state legislation
require that these funds be used to help finance transportation improvements and
other business-oriented initiatives within the CID. This innovative source of
revenue ensures matching funds necessary for important road and public
transportation improvements is available and serves to accelerate the timelines
on the implementation of those projects.
The
CIDs, along with county and state government, are aggressively pursuing
expanded High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, bus rapid transit and extensive
interchange improvements on I-75 to help address the immediate and long term
transportation needs of the community.
The
CIDs each administer transportation management associations,
Commuter Club in
the Cumberland area and
CobbRides in the Town Center district. These associations work to
implement alternative modes of transportation for commuters.
Rail
The Norfolk Southern system operates
a main line through the southern part of the county. Norfolk Southern’s Cobb
operations include more than 18 miles of main line, almost 10 miles of second
main, and eight miles of sidetrack. The company estimates that 35 trains per day
run through Cobb County.
CSX Transportation also
operates a main line through the center of Cobb, running from Atlanta to
Chattanooga.
