2017 Small Business Hall of Fame Inductee

Gaskins Surveying and Engineering Company was named the 2016 Small Business of the Year by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce at the June First Monday Breakfast, presented by FINSYNC and LOUD Security Systems.

Gaskins has positioned itself as an industry leader throughout its 40 years of operation. Established in 1976, Gaskins launched as a small surveying company with a focus on creating a culture of values and producing quality workmanship. Today, Gaskins has expanded its services to include engineering, surveying, planning, consulting and construction management. In 2013, Gaskins was selected as one of the Cobb Chamber’s Top 25 Small Businesses of the Year. Gaskins Surveying and Engineering is co-owned by Brenda Susan Gaskins and D. Brandon Hutchins, President and CEO.

Gaskins has faced what any business would describe as catastrophic loss and adversity. Between 2007 and 2011, a set of circumstances left the company shaken to its core:

  • Revenues fell from $7 Million to $1 Million
  • 13 of their top 15 clients stopped doing business
  • Their number of employees dwindled from 100 to 18
  • And the company’s owner was diagnosed with ALS, eventually ending his battle with the disease in 2011.

In response, Gaskins leadership developed a strong vision and a clear strategy. In two years’ time, the company experienced an increase in sales by over 20 percent. Last year, sales growth was even better at 35 percent and, Gaskins set a new record with a 68 percent net profit increase.

As the Chamber’s 2016 Small Business of the Year, Gaskins Surveying and Engineering Company will compete in the state’s small business of the year competition.
